Arrowleaf Consulting is seeking to hire a Social Science Research Associate to collaborate on a variety of regional food system development projects. Research topics include Climate Smart and regenerative agriculture, food security, infrastructure and values-based supply chain development, sustainable dairy systems, and Tribal and intertribal food systems.

The Social Science Research Associate will collaborate with a team to plan, manage, and implement research projects, including gathering and analyzing data and summarizing results in reports, peerreviewed publications, and presentations as applicable. The Research Associate will act semiindependently and delegate tasks to other team members. Depending on the project, the Research Associate will be the lead or in a support role.

Specific duties will include

  • Implementing data collection, analysis, and write up as part of grant-funded research projects.

  • Contributing to feasibility studies, needs assessments, and planning processes.

  • Project management to meet deadlines within budget.

  • Delegating to, communicating with, and integrating the contributions of other team members into articles, presentations, reports, and other deliverables.

  • Supporting other Arrowleaf Consulting services, such as grant writing, as needed.

All team members at Arrowleaf Consulting work remotely (from Idaho, Washington, Oregon, or Montana), and the Research Associate must provide their own workspace. Arrowleaf Consulting will provide a computer and all software and supplies needed for the job.


This is a full-time position. Monthly pay is based on hours worked rather than salaried. Starting wage: $35-$45 per hour depending on experience. Benefits include paid leave, retirement, and health, dental, and vision insurance.


  • Master’s degree in a social science discipline or related field.

  • Graduate-level experience with social science research methods, including interview, focus group, and survey methodology.

  • Proficiency in qualitative and quantitative data analysis.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with a research team and clients.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including technical writing.

  • Experience writing research articles, reports, or proposals.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks, meet deadlines, and be organized.

  • Ability to work independently and remotely.


  • Ph.D. degree in sociology or related social science.

  • Applied research experience related to local, regional, sustainable, or Tribal food systems; community development;
    rural sociology; or related topics.

  • Peer-reviewed publication record, including as first author.

  • Grant writing experience.
